A Sedan Is The Ideal Family Vehicle
What did you base the purchase of your first car on? Was your first car a very costly, extremely luxury sports model or something a bit more basic? For many people the purchase of our first set of wheels was not based on the type of car, the colour of the vehicle or on the ultra awesome add-ons incorporated with the vehicle. No, we probably made the purchase mostly influenced by the cost of the vehicle.
Many people acquired our first vehicles when we were fresh out of school and on our way to technicon or college. Regardless of the type and colour of the vehicle, so long as it had 4 tyres and a steering wheel we were so proud of this extremely important buy!As the years accrue, certain factors will impact our car buying. Individuals with active outdoorsy lifestyles might have to invest in something more sensible such as a 4 wheel drive or other utility car. A stylish 2 door coupe may need to make way for a 4 door sedan or similar family vehicle. And the successful business person who spends several hours traveling each week will be better served by a luxury vehicle with power-steering, air-conditioning and cruise-control.
A sedan is the most popular family motor vehicle. This type of vehicle can be separated in three separate compartments - the engine, the passenger compartment and the cargo area. The passenger compartment will contain a minimum of 2 rows of car seats which could accommodate a minimum of four people.
If people hear the phrase family vehicle, they assume that the car involved has 4 doors and a cargo area at the back. This might be the most popular sedan configuration, however these cars are also available in two door versions and a variety of sedans even have the cargo area in the front and the engine towards the rear of the vehicle! There are actually so many different sorts of sedans available, that it can split into the subsequent groups: notchback sedans, fastback sedans, two-door sedans (also known as a coupe), hardtop sedans and hatchback sedans.
Last but not least would be the chauffeured sedans, commonly known as limousines. Limousines can cater to up to 20 passengers, depending on the size and configuration of the vehicle. These vehicles are naturally not purchased for their huge cargo areas, but rather for the luxury of being able to transport a group of people to a wedding party or other important function. Nevertheless the standard sedan configuration still is applicable: engine, passenger and cargo.
There are several stories and theories on where the expression sedan originates from. Some reckon it’s from a southern Italian dialect from the word “sedia” which means chair. Other people believe that the term sedan is based on the root “sed” from the Latin word “sella” meaning a carried chair. Regardless of where the word comes from, sedans are very popular vehicles and extremely practical - especially for families with kids who need enough chairs and the benefit of a big enough cargo area!
