Atlanta Police Catch Murder Suspects, Credit Security Cameras

The taking of another human being’s life is a part of our society that we simply cannot condone. When a murder does take place, it’s vital that the person that committed the deed is brought to justice to show that we will not tolerate these actions. As with other types of crime, a high quality security camera system often provides the crucial evidence to arrest and prosecute the perpetrators of these crimes.

In November of 2010, a thirty nine year old man and his girlfriend were on the way back to her apartment a little before ten at night, after having a few drinks in Atlanta, Georgia. The woman later told police that as soon as they got out of the car, she felt a gun pressed against her head. Three masked men then told her to give up her apartment keys and to take them to her residence. They all began walking toward her apartment for a bit, then the couple scattered and ran off. The woman dove over a balcony in an attempt to find help, she later reported to the police that she heard gun shots as she was fleeing. Atlanta police officers later found the man dead in front of one of the apartment buildings, he had been shot several times.

Soon after the incident was reported to the police, dozens of law enforcement officers fanned out and began searching the neighborhood for clues. They’re search turned up witnesses who reported seeing a dark colored sports utility vehicle speeding away from the area just after the man was killed. Four days after the shooting, the police discovered a SUV matching the description of the one used by the suspects abandoned in a parking lot and were able to determine that it had been reported stolen before the shooting. Some time later, police detectives found that a convenience store’s security cameras had recorded video of the the man that they believed was the ringleader for the small group of men who were involved in the killing.

A little less then a month after the thirty nine year old man was murdered the police department announced that they had caught the parties responsible, including the eighteen year old man from the gas station video footage. All three of the men were arrested and charged with murder and armed robbery. They were also linked to several other similar crimes in the area, including others that took place the same night as this killing. “Make no mistake,” Atlanta Police Chief George Turner said, “We have removed some very dangerous criminals from the streets of Atlanta.”

Once again the footage recorded by security cameras helped investigators to stay on the trail of suspects, which led to their eventual capture and prosecution. With the increased number of security cameras that we’ve seen in recent years, they should be able to provide even more of this type of assistance in the future.
