The Hard Times of RJ Berger has been described-by its creators and critics alike-as a cross between the teen-oriented television comedy-drama The Wonder Years (1988-1993) and the comedy film Superbad (2007). Grahame-Smith said that in talking with Katzenberg about developing the series, they “went back and talked about the iconic moments of being in high school, what were the most embarrassing, what were the most rewarding, what it was like to be embarrassed by our parents and struggling to attain the most beautiful girl. We found that the more we talked to each other and the writing staff, the more these universal stories emerged, and those are the stories we want to tell with the show.
