The Secret To The Golf Hook Headache
To score well, straigtening out a golf hook is a must. But, on the bright side, at least you don’t slice the ball which is a lot more difficult to fix. Taking the steps to remedy your golf hook woes may be easier than you think. By collecting information on how to work through this “snafu shot,” we have come up with the best answer on how to rid your swing of it. So let’s go to work and wipe out the dreaded hook - now.
Whenever you notice a golf hook, what you are looking at is a counter-clockwise rotation on the ball. The faster it spins in the wrong direction, the further the ball will go off into the weeds. Our first check will be on the club face. If the club face is not “square” at impact the resulting shot will never fly straight. We have to center on getting the face “square” when it makes contact with the ball.
Most advanced players will agree that the best way to fix a hook, is looking at the way you are handling the club. Here’s an easy way to find out:
With your driver, approach the ball as if you were going to tee off. If you are right-handed, look down at your hands, especially your left hand. Ask yourself, “How many knuckles do I see?” If only two are showing, then you’re grip is fine. If you happen to see three knuckles or more, then we need to make an adjustment.
Look at the face of the club. Which way is it pointing? Is it “square” to the target line? Remember the knuckles? Two knuckles should coincide with a closed club face. You’re not there quite yet. You still have to swing the club. You have to keep your hands in this position coming into the ball. Ease into a practice swing noticing your hand placement right before it meets the ball. Don’t shy away because it doesn’t feel normal. This is a learning process. Shrugging it off and resorting back to your old grip will result in you’re old scores. Lock this new grip into your memory bank.
If your grip is fine, that’s excellent! You now know where the problem isn’t, right? We now pay attention to how well you stay balanced in your swing. Feel the distribution of the weight in your feet. It should be on the balls of your feet, not on your heels. This leads to a smooth turn and keeps everything in line throughout the entire swing. Being balanced “at the ball” will give you the best chance to hit a straight shot.
The golf hook has a good chance of being healed if the left arm remains straight through impact. Just ask someone to keep an eye on your left arm through your swing. No more flying elbow (“chicken wing”) in your swing!
We are convinced that one of the above drills will cure your golf hook problem. It will now take a little effort on your part. Practice time on the practice range is invaluable. And with this information you are now ready to seek out this swing invader and annihilate it!
When you need extra in-depth coaching on terminating the golf hook, then make a vow to get better and rid this awful habit from your game.
