Roberts has a significant advantage on the ground and should the two end up on the mat, expect Roberts to take full advantage. This should be the most interesting matchup of the prelims and I fully expect Roberts to submit Soto in the second round.

Former WEC champion Mike Brown will make his UFC debut against Diego Nunes Veteran MMA fighter Antonio McKee will make his UFC debut at 40 years-old and will have his hands full with Jacob Volkmann. As UFC 125 approaches stay tuned as I will bring you more info as the fight card approaches and analysis of the fights as they occur.

LAS VEGAS, NV (TheSpread) - The co-main event of UFC 125 on Saturday is a middleweight contest between fan favorite and rising star Chris Leben and former solider Brian Stann. Here is a look at my pick for this bout.

Leben has got new life to his career due to his amazing set of wins over Aaron Simpson and Yoshihiro Akiyama over a span of three weeks this past summer. Leben has always been an exciting fighter and he puts it all into his fights. He is primarily a striker but has under-rated ground skills. He has had a lot of success against strikers in his career, but struggled against grapplers and guys that had better boxing technique than he did.

Respect is the name of the game for Chris Leben at UFC 125. On fight night in Las Vegas, he’ll step in the Octagon with a guy who’s done more than his share of fighting. At the pre-fight press conference in the MGM Grand Lobby, Leben spoke about fighting a man who has seen real combat outside of a sanctioned body. Showing respect for his pending foe, Leben commended Stann, a former U.S. Marine, for fighting a different fight.

Everything that Stann has seen in combat makes for great preparation when heading into fight night because of the ability to handle the mental and physical stress it takes to be a soldier, sailor, airman, or marine. According to Stann, whatever experience Leben has collected in the fight game will not outweigh the experience Stann has received outside of it.

The scrap marks Edgar’s second straight as the division’s king. Despite sweeping former ruler BJ Penn for arguably 50 championship minutes to solidify his spot atop the 155-pound totem pole, the Jersey boy will once again be entering the cage as the underdog. Maynard is looking for a repeat performance of his lopsided unanimous decision win over Edgar from back in April 2008.

UFC 125 is headlined by the first World Lightweight Title fight to not feature B.J. Penn since the summer of 2007 and only the third such matchup in the championship’s near decade-long existence. Penn’s nemesis Frankie Edgar (13-1; 2KOs, 3SUBs) tries to build on his two victories against the longstanding divisional kingpin by defeating the only man to beat him, TUF7 semi-finalist Gray Maynard (10-0-1NC; 2KOs). In many ways Edgar and Maynard are strikingly similar.

The same is true of Edgar, and whatever the rights or wrongs of their run of decision victories, no one can dispute that between them they have defeated virtually all the top contenders in the lightweight division. When they last met, Maynard secured a shutout points victory. Will the result be the same on January 1?

“UFC 125: Resolution” will be jumping off tonight inside the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The first preliminary bout is scheduled to start at approximately 7:20PM ET/4:20PM PT. Make sure to stay with 5thRound.com all night for our live coverage. ION Television will air three live preliminary bouts beginning at 9PM ET/6PM PT. The pay-per-view broadcast begins immediately after the hour-long freebie at 10PM ET/7PM PT. A lightweight title scrap between champ Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard will headline the Octagon’s first show of the new decade. Edgar will be entering his third consecutive title fight when he rematches Maynard tonight. The bout marks his second straight as the 155-pound king.
