Wedding Photography Tips

It’s your big day! How much blood, sweat, tears and money has been sacrificed to the most inportant day of your life? How much time and effort have you put in to choose your wedding photographer? How do you select a wedding photographer? How many wedding photographers have you interviewed or do you think you’re going to interview for your upcoming nuptials? If you’re thinking many, you’re probably absolutely right. capturing great wedding photographs is not something that will happen easily. To a good wedding photographer it’s fun, creative and it’s something they are really passionate about - should be! So when planning for your wedding how can you select between all the potential wedding photographers you meet or whose portfolios you browse through?

Bear in mind that many wedding photographers don’t hold qualifications or certificates for this work the way a mechanic or hairdresser does. If you’re thinking that a special diploma or degree is going to make a difference you might want to exercise caution. Many wedding photographers have a creative flair that isn’t derived from a classroom or college professor but from a passion for their art and an in-depth knowledge of camera techniques.

The first consideration before choosing your photographer is the style of wedding photography; ?? la mode, classic, reportage etc, the choice is yours. Probably the best way to choose between wedding photographers is to scrutinize their portfolio with a critical eye. All photographers have websites, visit as many as you can looking for distinct styles and techniques. How do their wedding portraits look? Are they lack lustre, characterless, out of focus, amateurish or do they just look like everyone else’s? Many wedding photographers use exciting poses and effects to really dress up the photos. Posing the couple in an interesting location such as on a rock on the beach or on a small bench in a garden is very popular with brides rather than the standard studio poses. Remember that it is up to the wedding photographers to come up with these charismatic and unique poses and settings. Make sure that they have the creative abilities to plan such poses and settings for your own portraits.

It’s also essential for wedding photographers to get a real feel for the personality of the bride and groom and the wedding itself. Weddings can be formal, exquisite or informal and anything in between. The photographs are going to be different for the types of settings and for the brides themselves. If you’re trying to determine between wedding photographers and one seems as if he or she isn’t listening to you or isn’t adaptable about their poses and settings then perhaps you should move on. Photographs need to look as individual as you are and as your wedding will be, so your photographer needs to treat you like an individual as well.

Cost is also a deteminant when selecting wedding photographers but bear in mind that budget usually means disappointment. Your wedding is probably going to be one of the biggest and most costly days of your life and the photography is a critical aspect of the day and for many years to come - a picture is worth a thousand words! No photographer should just give you a set package with a “take it or leave it” attitude. Make sure they have different packages available to you and to any family members or friends who may also want to purchase certain pictures as well. If you apply all these tips when appointingyour wedding photographer you’re sure to make the correct decision. Remember your photographer is there to escort you through the process, it’s a nonstop dialogue of ideas prior to your wedding day. It’s a passion not a job!!
