The 2012 Calendar probably has something to do with the Mayan Calendar. The Mayan, a great pre-american civilization predicted that the world as we know it will end on December 21, 2012 - that is how specific their calendar is. The end of the world is already a scary enough notion that theorists easily interpreted this literally. They think that the Mayans had thoroughly studies the heavens and the planets that is why they know how the world will come to an end.

This is why most doomsday theories or the most popular ones include some sort of heavenly body collision - whether it be a planet colliding into the Earth or a meteor colliding with the Earth and showering mankind with balls of fire. Other doomsday theories have also come up regarding a great flood or maybe a magnetic pole reversal or worse - all these disasters in one day, sort of like overkill.

Most of these 2012 doomsday theories though are just literal interpretations taken out of context. In order to better understand what the Mayan said, there should be a study and a background given as to how the Mayan came to believe of this.

What is so astonishing about all these doomsday theories is that they failed to study the Mayan belief. For them, the ending of a world is a cause for celebration. It does not necessarily mean that some big disaster is going to befall mankind and will completely obliterate us from the face of the planet. For the Mayan, it means that the end of the world is the ending of an age.

If this age saw the rise of commercialism and materialism, then maybe what we can expect for the next age is an increase in spirituality and kindness in men. Maybe 2012 is the year that will help us transcend our physical nature and start embracing our spiritual side.
